Why does the Torah seem to repeat the "mistake" of parental favoritism with Jacob and Joseph? Is the modern disintegration of the family unit a new phenomenon, or a spiritual battle that has been raging since the beginning of time? And how do the rivalries between the tribes explain the political and religious fractures in Israel today?

In this profound episode of Parasha Deep Dive, host Shlomo Godsi is joined by the prolific author and expert on the teachings of Rav Kook, Rabbi David Samson.

Together, they bridge the gap between the counter-culture of the 1960s and the holiness of the Patriarchs, offering a "laser-sharp analysis"of Parashat Vayechi. They explore the tension between the universalism of Joseph and the nationalism of Judah, revealing how these ancient archetypes are the key to understanding our current moment.

In This Episode, We Uncover:

  • Woodstock vs. Sinai: Rabbi Samson shares his personal journey from the "free love" communes of the 1960s to the Yeshiva world, dismantling the illusion of the commune and revealing the "Divine design" of the traditional family unit.

  • The Psychology of Favoritism: A deep look at why Jacob had to love Joseph more—not as a flaw, but as a recognition of Joseph's ability to translate spiritual beauty into material reality (the executive vs. the spiritual).

  • Joseph vs. Judah: Unpacking the cosmic battle between the "Universalist/Material" Jew (Joseph) and the "Nationalist/Spiritual" Jew (Judah), and why the Messiah needs both.

  • Rav Kook’s 3 Factions: A stunning explanation of the three camps in modern Jewish society—Religious, National, and Liberal—and why we cannot survive without all three.

  • Senseless Love (Ahavat Chinam): Why the hatred between the brothers was a necessary precursor to the "senseless love" required to build the Third Temple.

On the Alshech's Yortzeit, I Received a Message... After morning prayers in the Alshech Shul, I would learn the Alshech’s Torah, just me and him. It was an intimate process that began my close connection with this great sage. Then, on Erev Pesach 2023, at 2 AM, I received a clear message: open a center of learning here, at the Alshech Shul, for the English-speaking communities around the world. I later realized that very night was the Alshech’s Yortzeit. That realization still gives me the chills! This Academy is not just a project; it is a response to a divine call. I humbly ask you to join me in answering it.
